Facebook says the online giant will acquire VK.
Com, which is part of VK, a Russian-owned social network owned by the state-owned oil giant Rosneft.
The move comes after Facebook was forced to backtrack on its promise to shut down VK.
Its decision comes amid mounting criticism of the platform’s content policies and its decision to close VK’s VK.co service.

It is also popular among some westerners looking to share news on their social media platforms.
But VK. com has a long history of issues with censorship and the Russian government has been cracking down on its popularity in recent years.
The company is also accused of having links to a Russian state-sponsored propaganda site run by the FSB.
VK.COM’s founder, Pavel Durov, has denied the allegations, and the company has been under intense scrutiny for years.
VK said in a statement on Tuesday that the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and that it is working to improve the platform for the benefit of its users.
VK has about 3.5 million active users and around 2.2 billion page views per month, according to the company.
Com platform had 4.4 million active visitors in March, the company said.
VK says its aim is to build a “world-class” social network that has “social, political and business content that is relevant and relevant in a new and different way to Facebook, Twitter and other platforms.”
VK is now a subsidiary of the state oil giant Gazprom, which was spun off from the state energy giant Rosner in July.
The company has long been under fire for its content policies, with critics saying it restricts freedom of speech, censors users’ profiles and sells access to information that could be used to blackmail people.
According to Reuters, Facebook will acquire a controlling stake in VK.
In an interview with the Wall Street journal, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said VK. is a “powerful platform” and “one of the biggest platforms that we are working on today.”

A Facebook spokesman said the company was in the process of “engaging with partners to make this transaction work” and that the two companies are currently in discussions about the acquisition.
